Find it necessary to raise thier children in an english household and not teach them spanish? My mom is puerto rican and my dad is half dominican and half black. They both speak spanish but growing up they refused to teach me spanish, when we moved from New york to georgia. The only reason i know it spanish is cuz i always was around mi tio and tia and they always spoke it to me, and made me understood. My mother's excuse was that she didn't want people to look down upon me because of my heritage, she said puerto ricans and dominicans especially here in the south. I don't understand because aren't you supposed to be proud of who you are and where you come from? I think thats bullshit, because spanish is apart of who i am. I know a lot of hispanics that get looked down upon becuz they don't speak spanish. I don't do that because thats wrong, but i think its wrong when you dont' want to learn about your culture or where you come from. But can someone give me a good and i mean GOOD reason why hispanic parents try to NOT teach thier children spanish? cuz so far i have heard not ONE good reason!

The one reason I keep hearing from other people is that there parents didnt want to teach them spanish because it would have "confused" them speaking both spanish and english to them while they where growing up. To that I say BULLSHIT!!! My first language was spanish, up until the age of 5, when i started school. From then on it was english all the way, never had ESL (english as a second language) or anything like that. So in school it was always english and home with my parents it was always spanish..To prove that shyt is nonsense about confusing the kids..by the time I was in 3 grade I was readin @ a 6th grade level and when I was in 5th grade my ass was being sent away to another class with kids who where reading above there grade level. Grant it there werent many of us but still, proves shit isnt true. I have 6 other siblings and all of us are biliingual and are very fluent in spanish and english..and now I also am able to speak conversation italian. So to all the parents out there...dont buy into that shyt..teach ur kids both languages..it will only work to their advantage when they grow up..many peeps only get jobs due to the fact that they are in fact bilingual or trilingual ir whateva. Its a dis service in my opinion not to teach or have learned both languages and a lil more about where u came from. Anyway, just my spin on shyt.

The real reason (let's face it folks) why parents dont teach their kids spanish is because they feel ashamed of their ownselves. Meaning: that it's believed and to some point proven that if you're an immigrant who cant speak english or does speak it but with an accent you're looked down upon. Of course they dont want their kids to go through that so the best way to avoid any type of conflict is to not teach them spanish. Also if a hispanic male or female marries an Anglo the chance of their child learning spanish is greatly reduced unless both parents agree to have a bilingual kid....any excuse that you're parents give you is bullshit.

i agree with some comments above that there is a small window of years that u can pick up on many languages...i mean cmon peeps, fuck, its said we only use 20% of our brain capacity..so u tellin me we cant all learn more then one language? i know many europeans who speak 2, 3, 4 languages..so how come we cant hear?! just the pressure many hispanic parents feel to get their kids a better "future" then they can have, and part of providing that future includes forgetting the PAST....unfortunatly that many times means leaving your native tounge behind...so from someone who speaks 3 languages here..i say bullshit to those who refuse to give their shorties a real chance of getting ahead by letting them be bilingual. I dont see who learning more then 1 language can be anything but a plus. Then they can say to my friends who only speak English what i always tell them when they say something about me speaking spanish..i always tell them im at least 2x as smart as them..why? cause i know everything they know in @ least 2 diffrent languages..that means i learned double the info they did in their lifetime..therefore my brain is holding @ least twice as much info as theirs..lol..GETS THEM ALL THE TYME! HAHA :D

lame excuse. why are you putting this on your parents? if you are eager to learn spanish then do so by taking spanish classes/courses and learn it properly using proper grammar.

deviating a little from the original topic here...but a good majority of the latin immigrants in the us cannot speak spanish. after a while they pick up some english words and add it to the broken spanish they already know. it is just pathetic! you don't need a formal education to learn either language. just pick up a fucken book and teach yourself. read literature in spanish or english. and i do mean literature not supermarket pocketbook novels.

I learned spanish but its the simple fact that in school they have people who have no spanish background or never been out of the country in thier life, trying to teach people spanish. COme on now! I did teach myself along with the help of my family members, but its hurtful to know you had to learn spanish on your own and with family memebers with NO HELP from your own parents. how fucked up does that sound?

Spanish= Another White man's language (this is not to bash on white people)
Gauging from your complexion and where you said your parents are from, a good guess of how Spanish got into your family in the first place is slavery (i.e. your ancestors cultivating azucar, etc.), colonialism, etc. People should take pride in being literate, intelligent, and increasing that knowledge instead of patting themselves on the back for knowing multiple languages and not much else (yes, I know many degenerate bilinguals with nothing going for themselves... in fact for every bilingual you can produce who is going somewhere, I can pull out 3 who aren't fit for a damn thing). Don't get so upset at your parents, because although the confusion of languages as a child is weak (hell, you can learn to speak Chinese if it is spoken to you as a baby), at least they gave you a decent foundation in English. And whereas some kids manage to pick up English when they start school (yes, remember you live in the US), parents slacking on teaching their children English are literally F*CKING up school systems for school aged Americans who already know English, because politicians are stretching school budgets to #1 pay for school for illegal immigrants and children of illegal immigrants (whose parents are not paying proper tax to cover their expenses) #2 make bilingual, trilingual schools (or schools with translators) and both of these situations are occuring in areas that CAN'T AFFORD to even spend money on proper books, enough desks, etc for the students they already had. You know English, you know Spanish, but I hope instead of griping about your parents oversight, you are filling your head with knowledge to convey in both or either language. Parents make mistakes.

I understand everything your saying, i do excel in school, i have my diploma graduated with a 4.0 gpa, fine arts seal, and im attending college in the fall to further my education in pre-law. I know parents make mistakes and i know spanish now, but i just always wandered why it was a big deal to limit spanish-speaking in the house hold.
