My family do it all the time, they hate on pplz who are Latino/a who act "white"

My cousin being half blk, hates on blk pplz who act "white".

I talked to a few friends who are mexican, they hate on Chicanos/as because they claim that thier language is bein doluted by white.


My questions:

- What are sum stereotypes that you are tired of hearing?

- In most cases why is it not okay for a white person to act like a Latin or African American person? And vice versa.

- Is resistence to "white washed" a way to keep our cultures intact?

Regardless of how much we hate it, from soceity's view, they have thier perspective of how different ethnicities act.

For some reason I don't understand the whole concept of "acting Latin or African American. Maybe sometimes those certain people act like different races cuz maybe they were brought up around that certain race. Sometimes people who hang around with a specific crowd (white for example) they tend to start behaving similar.

I agree. Different cultures/ethnicities have different definitions as to what "acting white" means.

Desis and Eastern Asians might say ''acting white" is being lazy, air-headed, being a drug-addict, having no respect for your parents, not caring about your education, and engaging in pre-marital sex or promiscuity.

Then, I hear some blacks and mestizos at my job saying that "acting white" means to be nerdy and talk with proper grammar......

American culture is an individualistic society, unlike some Eastern cultures that are collectivist, where people are expected to generally follow the crowd. Thus, trying to define how to act like a race may not apply over here, if each person does what they want to do.

I may think pre-marital sex is okay, but the next Desi person might say it's an atrocious cultural violation. Another white person may say it's okay, but then some other orthodox Catholic girl will say that it's very wrong. So, how can we say "how to act white" or "how to act desi, hispanic, etc?"

short answer, no. however, there are certain cultural influences (excluding the stereotypcial TV black or latino) that are particular to certain communities.

I think you should act like what your major cultural influence. in general, i can tell when a person who is calling me is black, latino or white over the phone. reason being is the gluttoral tone used by diff cultures is diff.
as far as acting white, its really a matter of judgement. for example: a friend of mine wsa outside with shorts and a sweater on one day. now, here in my area, the only people who do that are white boys. in essence, acting like another ethnicity is really going out of your way to fit in with them when you hsould feel secure in your own cultural influences.
