actually, a study was done and it was found bad to listen to music while working out.
Only when different BPM's were listend to in a session.
Somehow it affects your heart going from 1 extreme to the other was determined dangerous.

I personally dont feel comfortable listening to music unless its coming from a stereo that's not too loud. I just dont feel secure handling on those heavy metal weights with no hearing. Like something could go wrong and the weights could slide off and land on my foot or somewhere around those lines.
